Vegas Viper (Pimp My Plane) ~ 5-1-11: AOPA's featured article shows a 1964 Piper Comanche owned by a Las Vegas Real Estate development businessman that was blown away when he saw the AOPA Piper Archer makeover. I've heard from some people who lived in Vegas, and they mentioned that there are parts in Las Vegas that have abandoned projects and casino's that have had layoffs. But by the looks of this article, some real estate companies have weathered the economic storm quiet well. I like the math he used to calculate his project for restoring his vintage Comanche to a one of a kind custom make-over. So, he started out with a $80,000 initial investment, spent $148,171 on restoration and customization cost for a total investment of $228,171. He mentions that an equivalent new airplane would cost around $500,000, therefore he saved a quarter of a million dollars by restoring his 1964 Comanche. However, I noticed you can get a decent deal for a low time Cirrus for around $200k and cruise about 25 knots faster than the Comanche, but I don't know if some of the accessories would qualify as "bling." Maybe he'll donate the custom Comanche to AOPA for next years win-a-plane contest.

Aircraft Re-registration Notice! 4-24-11: A new law has been passed that requires all aircraft owners to "re-register" their aircraft. The FAA is updating its aircraft registry and is requiring pilots to re-register their aircraft on a specific, pre-set schedule. If you do not submit your re-registration by the end of a certain date, your aircraft could be grounded when your current registration expires. You must re-register within your assigned window that's illustrated on a chart. The FAA will not allow owners to register their aircraft ahead of time. Additionally, the online re-registration form will not permit owners to update their information once their re-registration window has closed. Owners then would need to complete a hard copy of the form and send it to the FAA, running the risk that their current registration would expire before receiving the new one.

Minimum Standards Approved ~ 4-23-11: The final version of Skyhaven Airport Minimum Standards for Commercial and Non-commercial Operators was approved by the SAAC and adopted by the PDA Board at last Thursday's board meeting. Emergency Medical Helicopters At Skyhaven ~ 4-22-11: Emergency Medical Helicopter Pickup at SkyhavenCLICK HERE FOR MORE PICTURES AND A VIDEOSteve advises that the heliport at the Dover Wentworth Hospital will be closed for several weeks and they will be using Skyhaven Airport as an alternate place to land. One of the many service's provided by Skyhaven airport is for emergency medical transport. Skyhaven's central location is an ideal place to land for medical emergency pilots. It's location next to route 108 provides easy access and transition for ground medical transport vehicles to emergency air transport. Emergency helicopters from Portland, Dartmouth Hitchcock and Boston are seen frequently flying in at a moments notice. Quite often, if there's an emergency on the highway, construction or any other hazard that requires medical transport there's usually a medical transport helicopter waiting at the Skyhaven Airport before the ground transport get's there.

ENOLA GAY VIRTUAL COCKPIT ~ 4-12-11:

Brunswick Executive Airport:
CLICK HERE TO VISIT THE BRUNSWICK WEBSITE
4-10-11: Have you ever landed at the Brunswick Naval Air Station? And the answer would probably be no, unless you fly a Corsair around at different airshows. But now that's all changed. The Navy completed an environmental impact statement which allowed the conveyance of property and the transfer of the 715 acres of runways, hangars and aviation facilities to the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority. Another 280 acres will be conveyed over the next few years, said Steve Levesque, executive director of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority. Although it has two parallel runways, the recent publications  show only one active runway. If I understand the publications correctly, you will have a hard time finding the tower frequency. Why? Because the airspace is Class E Unicom 122.725. Landing at a major airport with 8,000 foot parallel runways on unicom has got to feel weird. An article in the Navy Times said the Navy conveyed the land to the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, which plans to open the twin runways to general aviation April 2 under the management of Norwood, Mass.-based Flight Level Aviation. It'll be called Brunswick Executive Airport. So, most of the light single engine planes take off in less than 1000 feet. Do I clear myself for an intersection take-off, or do I taxi all the way down to the runway threshold. Hmmmm.... Click on the Brunswick insert to visit their website. SUN'n FUN  Disaster!CLICK HERE TO SEE SLIDE SHOW OF SUN'N AND FUN DISASTER ~ 4-2-11: Have you seen the pictures circulating around the web of wrecked aircraft from the Sun'n Fun? The damage from a weather storm that passed through is certainly incredible. If you visit Florida frequently there's a good chance that you might have witnessed the fury that Florida's weather storms can have. From cloud burst to hurricane's and even an occasional tornado, the mild beautiful warm sunny weather can turn to dangerous and damaging. This came to light one day when I visited a house for sale in a gated community. I opened one door to a room in this beautiful vaulted ceiling home to find a 6 x 6 room with a low ceiling and no windows. I said, "Is this a closet?" "Oh no," the realtor said. "It's the hurricane room." He described the room as being heavily fortified to withstand a full scale hurricane. Here's some links sent in from Jim to some pretty eye opening pics:

Minimum Standards Meeting Well Attended ~ 3-30-11: Minimum Standards meeting well attended, further revisions sought.
On the evening of March 24, the SAAC Minimum Standards Subcommittee held a well attended public meeting at the Aeroworks hangar.  EAA 225 provided their excellent grilled food for attendees between 5:30 and 6:30.  The proposed draft of Minimum Standards for Commercial Operators was then reviewed, paragraph by paragraph.  A large number of those present had reviewed the draft prior to the meeting.
A number of changes and clarifications were requested, mostly relating to the Skyhaven Flying club.  It was also clarified that  flight instructors who wish to instruct in their own airplanes would be subject to the Airport Minimum Standards for limited service operators (like Rochester Aviation, the flying school based at the field), but instructors who provide training in a student's aircraft are not affected by these regulations.Click on the link below to see the current draft of the Minimum Standards document.
The final draft will be reviewed at the public meeting  (7:30 a.m. on April 12th at the Skyhaven terminal building) by the SAAC Minimum Standards Committee.  This draft, with any final revisions made at that meeting will then be proposed for action by the SAAC at their subsequent public meeting at 8:30 at the same location.
The SAAC will then vote on this draft, which will be forwarded with SAAC's recommendation to the Pease Development Authority Board.
Comments from the public can be made on the SAAC web page under Skyhaven Airport Advisory Council Airport Feedback and Comments.
All comments received will be reviewed by the SAAC and their subcommittees on April 12 and included in the deliberations.  All SAAC meetings are public, and interested persons are invited to attend.

3-24-11: Hangar Happy Hour / First Friday Fiesta. Here's a notice from Southern Maine Aviation, "Join us for some hangar flying the first friday of every month, 5-7pm. We'll have food and refreshments and some good old-fashioned camaraderie. Come meet other pilots, ask questions of a CFI or mechanic, and hang out at your favorite place. Bring your kids, parents, and significant others! The period from 5-6pm will be primarily a social gathering with 6-7pm being set aside for more of a question/answer session with a different topic each week as a focus. Flight instructors and mechanics will be available to answer questions if you have any.  We will also play a round of "Stump the Chump" -- ask a question that none of the 'experts' can answer and win a door prize!  Better yet, ask a question that results in different answers from different experts!"
