GE's
New ATP Turbo
10-10-17 What does it take to make a turbo prop that has over 1000
hp? This
new engine could spell trouble for Pratt & Whitney's turbo's. "The
ATP is being designed, tested and produced in Europe, with 400 engineers
working in Poland, Italy, Prague and at GE’s Global Research Center in
Germany. A new $100 million H-series production center is expected to open
in the Czech Republic in 2020. According to GE, the ATP program as a whole
represents a $1 billion investment."

GPS APP FOR ANDROIDS: 10-4-17:
A lot of talk
about EFB's and I've seen
some pretty neat apps running on tablets. I have also seen a free download
GPS navigation tool that shows your position and data right on the sectional.
I have it on my Samsung S3. It's great for local flights as well as for
cross country. The Garmin 430 is supposed to be the primary GPS but I find
myself using it as a backup to the S3 app. It also has a feature called
"tracking." This allow you to trace your flight on the map and save it
as a KML file. You can then drag and drop the file on Google Maps and see
the flight path. You can also drop onto Google Earth and see the 3D version.

The famous L-39 that you see at airshows all over the U.S. is now being
updated to the Aero L-39NG, a turbofan-powered military trainer aircraft

by Aero Vodochody. It is a successor of the Cold War era Aero L-39 Albatros.
The aircraft is being developed in two versions.

The RedBull Flugtag was in Pittsburgh this year. This amazing company has
bragging rights of being the largest selling drink in the world. The founder

a Falcon 900 and a Super Cup and has a hangar full of vintage aircraft.
Some people have it good, and some people have it really good... Problem

The Antique Aircraft Association fly-in was held over Labor Day weekend
in Blakesburg, Iowa and the weather was perfect in eastern Iowa.
The following weekend brought the Midwest Antique Aircraft Club (MAAC)
fly-in up to Brodhead, Wisconsin and equally beautiful weather prevailed.
A
highlight of the event was celebrating Dick and Patsy Jackson’s 65th wedding
anniversary at the fly-in. The same weekend the 44th Annual Greenville
International Fly-In took place in beautiful Greenville, Maine. At
least three of our chapter members attended, including Alan Goodwin, Gerry
Hanscom and Gerry Peterson. Our monthly meeting on Tuesday, September
12th will feature a slideshow presentation of the Greenville Fly-In presented
by Gerry Peterson. ...MORE

The military and politicians talk about made in America like Henry Ford
did in his factories in the 1930's and 40's. However, the reality is that
we live in a global economy, and have been for a while. A good example
is Airbus. Subassemblies are made all over the world and sent to Alabama

New England Aerobatics Club held a practice session at Skyhaven this past

Skyhaven as a practice airport because of its proximity to wooded areas.

wooded area with low population just east of the runway." Click

Drilling
Holes The Diameter Of a Human Hair 8-3-17:
So, for all you home builders of planes and
parts and stuff, how would you drill a hole that is .003 inch in diameter?
The smarty pants answer would be a question of why would
you want to make such a small hole in the first place? GE Aviation decided
they needed cooling holes on the hot side of a turbine blade. They are
doing it with a Laser cutting machine that is combined with a low pressure
water jet (Note: 800bar = 11,603psi). The laser is fired inside a .003
inch diameter stream of water that cuts a precision hole or slot in material
up to 3/4 inch thick. I'll give that a Holy Mackerel.

And
The Winner Of The AOPA 172 Is? 7-29-17:
I know someone who got a notice from Publishers Clearing House that said
if you happen to be the winner of their $25,000,000 give-away prize, that
we hope you will show us how really happy you are for our cameras. Apparently,
some winners
have some very stunned unemotional reactions and are speechless... uh,
oh, uh, really? But not so with the AOPA winner. He seems to be ready for
the part. Being a line and instructor pilot for Allegiant Airlines and
also deals with the public through his real estate business he had the
correct response for the prize patrol... Maybe next year a retired factory
worker thinking of taking the Rusty Pilot course will win the next AOPA
give-away and be lost for words.

How
to Protect Astronauts from Space Radiation 7-21-17:
I've read articles about airline pilots getting exposed to Cosmic Rays,
although most of the dangerous radiation coming from outer space is filtered
by the earth's magnetic field. However, when you go in outer space, you
have two types of radiation to contend with. One is the radiation
from CME's from our sun, the other is Cosmic Radiation coming in from outer
space. Scientist are working on a material that will block the radiation
that's called "Hydrogenated boron nitride nanotubes." This material contains
hydrogen which is the prime ingredient to block those pesky protons from
destroying your DNA.

that generous. How about +/- 50 feet? That can be a challenge without autopilot.
By the time you finish switching pages on the GPS, checking the right zoom,
clearing the map clutter, setting the next radio frequency, checking ATIS...
oops, I just lost 150 feet and 10 degrees on heading... and don't forget

CHOOSES GAS OVER SOLAR FOR DRONE 7-9-17:
A team of MIT engineers launched Jungle Hawk Owl from the back of a compact
car at Plum Island airport in Newburyport Mass. It was the first flight
for the 24-foot-wide drone, which the team believes is capable of staying
in the air for five days on a single tank of gas. The U.S. Air Force needed
a low cost drone to stay aloft for long periods of time. As it turned out,
after doing all the calculations, they determined that a gas engine would
be better than solar power.

AVIATION
NEWS & FINLETS 7-6-17:
So I'm sitting in the office wating for my AME to renew my aviation medical
reading an article in Aviation News about a company that is using Computational
Fluid Dynamics to study the airflow on aircraft surfaces including the
body and engine cowlings. The computer program uses complex mathematical
equations to determine where the airflow will go and how it affects drag.
Recommendations from this company on military aircraft have determined
that it will save about 1% in fuel cost. So if you see any Boeing 737's
with "finlets" all over the tail section of the plane it means they're
saving 1% in fuel cost. Maybe the Ford Trimotor was on to something...

ADS-B
For Skyhawks and Cherokees 6-26-17:
Garmin claims to have the answer for upgrading the large base of Cessna
172's and Piper single engine economy grade planes out there that
are currently equiped with vintage radio stacks with cranking knobs and
microphones that were actually used before the day that headsets became
mandatory standard equipment. The new solution is the GTX 345 mode S transponder.
It not only provides you with the mandatory ADS-B out, but also the ADS-B
in and also has XM satellite weather. This new information appears in the
form of new pages in your Garmin 430w gps radio... that is if you have
one. To get up-to-date, here's a couple of PDF files. One about the Addendum
to the Garmin 430 and the other is for the GTX 345. Click on the pictures
to download.
