UNEXPECTED
METAL FATIGUE 9-8-18:
"You
can perform a simple fatigue experiment with a paper clip. Take a paper
clip, flex it at the same angle and count how many flexes it takes to break.
That, in essence, is fatigue life calculation," according to
Digital Engineering newsmagazine. With the high demand requirements for
todays jet engines, all the critical high stress components have a cycle
limit. And yes, in spite of all the advances in science, physics and engineering,
the unexpected will surprise the most intelligent people on earth. Murphy's
Law will not go away... "In April, just days after the fatal engine failure
incident on Southwest Airline flight 1380, the Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA) announced its intent to issue an emergency airworthiness directive."

SKYHAVEN
FLYING CLUB HAS HIGH DEMAND CESSNA SKYHAWK 172M!
9-3-18: More than 35,000 pilots are now flying under BasicMed, and AOPA’s
success getting Rusty Pilots back in the cockpit is also contributing to
increased demand, according to flight school operators, some of whom are
struggling to find enough airplanes to keep up with a growing number of
students. Rodney Martz, a senior aviation technical specialist in AOPA
has never seen such a sharp increase in price for used aircraft models
as the $6,000 to $10,000 increase in the price of used Skyhawks produced
between 1968 and 1976 shown in the latest quarterly reports. Vref now lists
retail prices up to $51,000 for a 1973 Cessna 172M with a mid-time engine,
a 24-percent increase since the previous quarterly report.

Into the Dark, August 2018 8-22-18:
This summer has been pretty unusual with the record heat and rain showers.
But eventually it clears and a VFR day comes along. In this evening flight
I noticed a bright moon overhead. Not a full moon, but it was still pretty
bright. I couldn't focus on it in video mode but a did manage to capture
a close-up pic with the craters and other moon geographic features.

RECORD
SALES FOR PIPER 7-25-18:
"At April’s Sun ‘n Fun International
Fly-In and Expo, Caldecott vowed to go "head to head with Cessna" for the
training market. The company appeared to be making good on the promise
after selling 100 Archer TX models to ATP Flight School, which has multiple
locations in the United States. An historic deal in February sent 152 training
aircraft to China’s Fanmei Aviation Technologies flight school. The Piper
factory is so swamped with future orders that it recently held a job fair
to hire more than 30 employees. “That Archer DX is a great product,” he
confided. “It’s so quiet it’s unbelievable. You should really fly one.”"
Here's an interesting quote from AOPA: "Piper
PA–28-180. The Piper 180 was the precursor to the Piper Archer and was
made from 1962 to 1974. If you focus on the 180, you are getting something
slower but similar to a faster $345,000 Piper Archer, but costs less than
$50,000.Aug 5, 2015

The
Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome 6-23-18:
Have you ever heard of Old Rhinebeck Airport in New York State? Yes, it's
the famous airport were they have a museum of old vintage airplanes from
the Orville and Wilbur era. But the amazing part is that they take the
planes out of the museum and fly them and simulate the Red Baron air fights.
Well in 2015 a dream was realized from the owner Cole Palen started in
1970 was to build a replica of the Charles Linbergh plane. They even got
permission to take actual measurements from the real Spirit of St. Louis
as it hangs off the ceiling at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington,
D.C. from a cherry picker.
KC-135
Stratotanker Celebrates 62nd Anniversary— Will
it Make it to 100? 6-17-18:
In a recent editorial the article mentions the government has decided to
keep the KC-135 and do another update. "The KC-135 fleet was going to be
replaced by the KC-46 Pegasus, also from Boeing. Cost overruns and delays,
however, led to the Air Force slashing the number of planes it was going
to buy to just 179. So, after some discussion, the Defense Dept. has decided
to continue upgrading the tankers with a $910 million extension program
that includes better navigation and autopilot subsystems, a glass cockpit
(no more analog gauges), and other enhancements. The Air Force estimates
that the currently active KC-135s have only used up 35% of their lifetime
flying hours, which seems hard to believe. But this means the airframes
can remain operational through 2040 with regular maintenance and scheduled
overhauls. In fact, the aircraft could remain operational for 100 years.
Hard to believe in these days of disposable technology."

Landing
On Old Orchard Beach 6-11-18:
Last December I reported on the Old Orchard Beach landing event. According
to the website it looks like they will be doing it again this year. On
October 1st, 2017, there was a fly-in at Old Orchard beach. The whole event
is said to be organized by a 15 year old student. By the looks of
the poster, they are planning on doing it again in 2018. "Thousands of
people lined Old Orchard Beach on Sunday afternoon to watch 15 small planes
descend from the sky and land on the sand, much like aviator Charles Lindbergh
did 90 years ago. After taking off from Biddeford Municipal Airport a few
miles to the west, the parade of planes circled to the east and then came
in from the north to land on the beach under cloudless skies. Organizers
estimated that between 5,700 and 6,300 people attended, standing 20 feet
deep along 3,500 feet of barrier fencing set up to keep them off the landing
strip."

Parlin
Field Newport added to NH Historic list 6-7-18:
According to recent news
articles the Parlin Field Hangar in Newport is one of eight buildings being
added to the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places. "The airplane
hangar, which was originally built in 1929, is likely the oldest in the
state." According to the State Historical Resources Council, the hangar
is an example of a prefabricated metal building that was popular at the
time. Newport’s Parlin Field Hangar was included in the new group of eight
Historic Places along with Bridge Memorial Library in Walpole and the Wilmot
Town Hall. "Designation of a property as historical, which is a pre-qualification
for many grant programs, including Conservation License Plate grants and
New Hampshire Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP) grants."
