An Evening
Flight at Skyhaven in August 8-16-19:
Runway 15 is pretty much hidden from the traffic passing by. But if you
could walk around the corner here is what you would see. How about some
Cessna Skyhawk's, the Cessna for skydivers from New England Skydive, an
ultra-lite, a Cessna 152 and more...

In lieu of something from Todd, since he’s quite busy bringing in the new

F-16s intercept 2 planes that violated NJ no-fly zones8-9-19:
A temporary flight restriction will be in effect Aug. 9 to 18 in the Bedminster
and Morristown area of New Jersey, where President Donald Trump owns a
golf resort, a week after several TFR incursions in the same airspace
scrambled interceptors and attracted news media attention. According
to local news reports, North American Aerospace Defense Command aircraft
intercepted two single-engine airplanes for violating Bedminster airspace
under an active TFR the evening of Aug. 2. A third aircraft was chased
out on Aug. 3. NORAD
officials say the two incidents occurred at 7:30 and 8 p.m. where the pilots
of single-engine civilian aircrafts were not communicating with air traffic
controllers. Some articles have described tfr's as an encroachment
of the airspace and others view them as important safety features.......

Franky
Zapata Rides Again 8-5-19:
Franky Zapata is in the news again
with his jet power hover board. According to recent articles he just recently
crossed the English channel from France to England with
one refueling stop at the halfway point. We did an article about him last
year (click here) with some information
about his jet pack. His most recent jetpact platform looks like he might
of added another jet engine. Back then I speculated the legitimacy of the
videos but he's been appearing at events all over France and some in the
U.S. According
to Techspot, "After failing on his first attempt, the French inventor
of the Flyboard Air jet-powered hoverboard has achieved his dream of crossing
the English Channel on his device."

Asteroid Coming To Earth in 2029 7-31-19:
So the asteroid that just past by in July did so unnoticed until it got
here. However, astronomers have been tracking another asteroid that's three
time bigger than the recent one and is predicted to pass by at around 19,000
miles. It was discovered in 2004 and the astronomers are pretty comfortable
it won't hit us, but it will be another close encounter. By the way, our
communications satellites have geostationary orbits at around 22,000 miles.
Currently the path or the 2029 asteroid called Apophis is not expected
to take out any satellites unless something disturbs the asteroid's orbit
sometime between now and Friday, April 13, 2029... hope you're not superstitious.
Asteroid
Near Miss! 7-30-19:
An asteroid snuck by us recently apparently undetected until
it went by us. What's alarming
is that it came very close to Earth. Relatively speaking, anything that
passes by that's closer to Earth than the Moon especially when it's only
25,000 miles is considered close. The picture to the left was taken from
a NASA spacecraft named MESSENGER back in 2005 on its way to Mercury at
a distance of 65,000 miles. The asteroid was around 400 feet across and
if it hit the earth it could destroy a whole city. The astronomers called
it a "city killer." In 2003 an asteroid blew up
over Russia and damaged roofs with an intense shock wave and a light show
in the sky that caused the local people to wonder if they were under attack.
That asteroid was only 65 feet across. The last time an asteroid hit the
earth the size of the one that just flew by was not that long ago. How
about in 1908. That asteroid flattened 770 square miles of forest in Siberia.
The pentagon drawn over Boston to the right is about 770 square miles...
ouch!
Celebrating
the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11: 7-27-19: This article
from an engineering publication called "Tech Briefs" focusses on the space
trip to Mars. Yes, they are going to the moon first but the main goal is
Mars. "For the first time in a generation, NASA is building a human
spacecraft for deep-space missions that will usher in a new era of space
exploration. A series of increasingly challenging missions awaits, and
this new spacecraft will take astronauts farther than they’ve gone before,
including to the Moon and Mars. The Orion spacecraft is designed to meet
the evolving needs of NASA’s deep space exploration program for decades
to come. It will be the safest, most advanced spacecraft ever built, and
will be flexible and capable enough to travel to a variety of destinations."
AOPA'S
2020 VAN'S AIRCRAFT RV–10 SWEEPSTAKES UNDERWAY7-20-19:
The AOPA give-away aircraft will not be a Stationair. Instead, it will
be a Vans RV-10. Interesting history about the plane that comes from Saskatchewan
Canada just above North Dakota. I talked to someone from North Dakota a
while ago and he called New Englanders a bunch of sissies when he hears
people complain about the 30 F winter. He says, heck, a typical day in
N.D. is -35 F as in minus 35 degrees F. The RV-10 has impressive specs
and cruises around 200mph. as you can see from the chips in the paint (where
gravel hit the leading edges), the airplane hasn’t been babied. "I learned
to fly in it, and so did my partner, so it’s done more than its share of
takeoffs and landings—and not all of them were things of beauty, if you
know what I mean.”

Scrum
for Hardware and Systems Development 7-14-19: An article
showed up recently about a design methodology called SCRUM. I looked all
over but there was no definition of the acronym. Come to find out, it's
not an acronym at all. The gurus who invented the SCRUM method borrowed
the word from rugby. Another thing that caught my attention was the comparison
of the Swedish fighter to the F-35. "Saab Aerospace used the Scrum method
to design the JAS 39 Gripen E, the Swedish strike fighter. This jet plane
is faster than the Lockheed-Martin F-35 Lightning, and has similar
combat range, but is not stealthy. Its initial cost is about half
that of the F-35 and its operating costs are about 25% of the F-35’s.
These cost benefits are attributed in part to the use of the Scrum."

Here we are in July!
Those warm days we wished for a few months ago are finally here. I’ve just

Looking for a quick look at the weather? I use the GFA from NOAA and of
course AOPA. I haven't made up my mind to use just one of them. Each one
has features that are different than the other that are very usefull. The
one I like the best is the "CIG/VIZ" on GFA. You get a clear uncluttered
picture of what's going on. And... the GFA is interactive. You can
click on the dots and get the metar.

great event at Skyhaven is the Wings & Wheels. I've talked to many
people that say they come every year and their kids love it. Combined with
the EAA Young Eagles program you can fly for free with local pilots that
donate their time and aircraft to help spread the word and fun of flying.
How often do you get a chance to climb inside a fire engine? Below is a

did Pat Jackson who told Sadie to seize the opportunity, for which, she
did!

Young Eagles Day 5-22-19:
Hello
Everyone, EAA launched a new Young Eagles website about a year ago.
Initially it was a trial version, but today it is refined and works pretty
good. I ask you all to check it out and if you participate in the
EAA Young Eagles program,
please register. It keeps track of your involvement and that of the
chapter. It will also keep you up-to-date on various EAA Young Eagle
events in your area, especially if you want to help out as a pilot or ground
volunteer. Please visit online at: Youngeaglesday.org
and
click on “Home Page” on the upper right of that page to start the process.
When the next page opens, then find “Sign Up” on the upper right.
Fill out the necessary information and check the box near the bottom and
click submit. If you wish to help at any Young Eagle events, you
can click on the event and volunteer. The system will send you an
email about 3 days before as a reminder and you have the option to accept
or cancel. By registering, it will help the chapter get a head count of
those who will volunteer, and approximate attendance of young eagles and
has the capacity to print forms and certificates. If you have any questions,
please contact me. Thank you in advance. Regards, Gerry
