225 February 2020 Newsletter
2-4-20: "Hello Everyone, Here
is the latest version of the February 2020 Newsletter. If you received
one already, there
may be some editing glitches. I inadvertently may have sent it out.
Regards, Gerry." Here's and excerpt from the newsletter: "Hi all, Well
here we are, moving right along in the new year. Young Eagle rallies are
right around the corner and it's time to start planning them. The
wings and wheels event is already in the planning stages. We had
a great turnout last year and I’d like to see us build on that this year..."
The
New B-21 Bomber? 2-03-20:
Recent news articles are talking about
the new B-21 bomber. However, there are articles going back to 2016 also
talking about the new B-21 bomber. If I understand correctly, articles
have been talking about the new B-21 bomber for over four years. Here's
an article dated Feb 2, 2020 about the B-21 and when they plan to start
building it.
AVIATION
WEEK ARTICLE The picture below
is from TEK22 website (click on it) that reads very similar to the 2020
Aviation Week article. Have you ever seen the B-2 bomber it is replacing
fly overhead? It must also have a cloaking feature because I've never seen
one fly by or even mentioned in the evening news.

Collings
Foundation Has Another B-17! 1-27-20:
The Collings Foundation has
wasted no time on recovering from the crash of their famous B-17 last
October. Avweb
reports that they have already reached an agreement with the FAA that
sounds like in 2020 you will be able to get a ride in a Collings Foundation WWII
aircraft. Not only that, they already have another B-17 currently being
restored to authentic WWII markings. The B-17 which was bought from Evergreen
Museum in Oregon back in 2015 never saw combat but has a very interesting
story which includes being painted black for CIA black ops missions to
fighting fires out west. In the blog
section of the Evergreen website, a pilot tells of a story when he was
flying the B-17 on a mission and took a direct hit from a fighter and completed
the bombing mission on three engines and then lost two more engines with
one of them windmilling. But it doesn't end there! He says he flew the
crippled B-17 with one engine and one engine windmilling in bad weather
back to a small airport with a runway too small for a B-17... what? ...

HIWAS
Being Decommissioned 1-20-20:
Do you remember what HIWAS is? Here's an excerpt from Avweb: "The unsung
weather tool, HIWAS, is no more. The NOTAM announcing its passing read
like a heartless obituary: “…outlet decommissioned Jan 8, 2020-permanent.”
Permanent. So cold for a reliable friend that, frankly, few of us understood.
HIWAS means (meant), Hazardous In-Flight Weather…um, something, something;
its purpose in life to broadcast impending meteorological doom over a scratchy
VOR frequency, back when pilots used VORs."

Be
Ready If You Lose GNSS 1-16-20:
In an article in Aviation
Week, Airbus is advising pilots to be aware of the possibility of losing
the GPS signal. They
also give examples on several ways various ground based devices can interrupt
the signal. What is their backup system? How about VOR-DME? Wait a minute,
haven't I been reading articles about decommissioning VOR's? Maybe not...
"The source can be a personal jammer activated in the vicinity of an airport,
a protection system around a sensitive site or military activity in a conflict
zone. A GPS repeater in a hangar, used for aircraft maintenance, can cause
interference with actual GPS signals, the experts note. GPS spoofing and
anti-drone measures have not created any problem yet, but Airbus monitors
such threats."

Alton
Bay Ice Airport 2020 1-05-20:
As I mentioned earlier, winter flying has its challenges but the rewards
translate into best performance numbers for the plane and engine. It also
gives you a chance to do something you can't do in the summer and that
is to land on the water with wheels! Just a short ride to the north of
Rochester, as a matter of fact, just maintain runway heading and 15 minutes
later you'll be over the Alton Bay Ice Airport. Here's a video of Paul
Larochelle from the Facebook page about the current status of the runway.
Looks like we'll be having a late start for 2020. Note: You might have
to click on the speaker icon to hear the audio.

Mooney
Reopens Kerrville Factory: 12-23-19:
I've always considered Mooney Aircraft a top of the line aircraft to satisfy
a niche market for pilots that are financially successful and want something
special and are willing to pay extra for it. It's apparent that niche market
is not overflowing with customers. Looking for some help they turned to
China for financial assistance but were unable to develop a winning strategy.
Who will come to their rescue? "The company sold only 14 aircraft in 2018
and only 4 in the first half of 2019. The company shut down and furloughed
all employees on 12 November 2019." more...

Boeing
readies first 777X to fly 11-29-19:
"The 777X is due to fly for the first time in early 2020, with the first
jet on track to be delivered to an airline in 2021 according to Boeing."
In 2018 they were
saying the first flight will be in 2019. In spite of all the advances in
technology, trying to predict a timeline for complex engineering projects
can sometimes be like trying to predict the weather. A corporate VP once
told a bunch of engineers in a meeting that he knows that they can meet
to new updated schedule. One of the engineering supervisors said, as long
as Murphy's Law doesn't give us any problems. The VP said, I don't believe
in Murphy's Law, make it happen. However, just like the Boeing 777 project
manager who said, "That was really hard,” said Clark. “I didn’t get any
younger during that project,” and the original target date was not met.

Flying
the Hudson River Corridor 11-25-19:
There's a whole bunch of videos on flying the VFR corridors under the NY
Class B airspace but this video is kind of unique. The pilot and copilot
sound very relaxed to the point they are making jokes about reporting points.
It's obvious this wasn't the first time they did this. I think I might
try it during the day first before doing it at night. It has to be the
ultimate night flight experience.

Cosmonaut
Alexei Leonov Dies At 85: 11-19-19:
What's so special about Alexei
Leonov? "Leonov became the first person to walk in space, floating freely
outside the Voskhod capsule for more than ten minutes high above the Earth."
It happened in 1965 during the U.S. and Russian space race. If I understand
correctly, a movie in Russia was release in 2017 and viewed by Vladimir
Putin with Alexei Leonov and some famous cosmonauts commemorating the event.
In Russia, Alexei
Leonov is a national hero. One of the things the movie reveals was the
many secrets about the problems Alexei had. That tube sticking out of the
ball shape spaceship is an inflatable air hatch... (that's unbelievable!)
Here's an interesting 8 minute YouTube video that gives a brief summary
of the Russian event.

Hypersonic
Passenger-Carrying Airliner 11-15-19:
Boeing is working on a hypersonic aircraft. Boeing's chief scientist on
hypersonics said that the magic number for high speed travel is Mach 5.
Mach 5 is the barrier and limit of current technology for aircraft and
engine materials. Beyond that require special ceramics and the less proven
scramjet engines. The engines for the Mach 5 plane would be a hybrid engine
that contains both a jet engine and ramjet. It would cruise at 90,000 ft
and could gilde 500 miles on its descent. They estimate it might be ready
in about 20 years.

Turn
Solar Impulse 2 Into Long-Endurance UAV 11-13-19: The famed aircraft
has been acquired by U.S. startup Skydweller Aero, formed by UAV experts
from Northrop Grumman’s Special Projects organization and backed by European
aerospace giant Leonardo and a group of private investors. Solar Impulse
to be converted in Spain and fly unmanned in 2020 as a medium-altitude
pseudo-satellite offers new mission capabilities. Skydweller describes
its aircraft as a medium-altitude pseudo-satellite
(MAPS)—a new class of UAV able to carry heavy payloads for long durations.
