You won't need a driver's license by 2040 09-18-12: Back in August I published an article about autonomous aircraft and speculated that you will probably be relinquishing control of your car in the not to distant future. Well, not to my surprise, here's a CNN article that talks about an actual timeline and where they're at currently. It sounds like the ultimate solution to tailgating, burning rubber, road rage and other types of abusive drivers is quickly coming upon us. Click on the picture to see the whole article.

TFR OVER New York 9-18-12  09-17-12: This is a pretty quick pop-up TFR. But for New York, I guess they must be learning to live with it... or not. FAA TO ESTABLISH TFR OVER NEW YORK, NY ON TUESDAY. A NOTAM has been issued that will restrict flight in the area during President Obama's planned visit. ==> WITHIN THE LATERAL LIMITS OF THE NEW YORK CLASS B AIRSPACE <== From the surface up to but not including 18000 feet MSL. New England Aerobatic Club (NEAC) at Skyhaven 9-22-12 ~ 9-13-12: CLICK HERE TO SEE SOME PICTURESCLICK HERE TO VISIT THE NEAC WEBSITEBack in June the New England aerobatic club was at Skyhaven to practice their stuff. Well they are back again. This event is approved by the FAA to use Skyhaven to practice their routines. The Date will be 9/22/12. Rain Date will be 9/23/12. Be sure to check the NOTAMS to changes in the flight patterns and information about the airport. Click on the black biplane to see pictures from one of their visits. The aerobatics club occasionally uses Skyhaven as a practice airport because of its proximity to wooded areas. According to an article, "Skyhaven has fuel and food locally and a densely wooded area with low population just east of the runway." The rain date was to fly on Sunday. Click here to see more information.  Below is a sample of the FAA data from their last visit to Skyhaven.

Solar Airplane Flies 3,000 Miles CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATIONWithout Fuel 09-09-12: At first, I thought this was another article about experimental solar planes flying a few miles on solar electric. But I quickly discovered this plane was a lot more serious than that. "The Solar Impulse HB-SIA airplane made of carbon fiber and has a wingspan equal to a Airbus  A340, completed a 3,000-mile trip from Switzerland to Morocco and back in July without using fuel. The plane weighs less than a family car and runs on 2,000 solar cells that turn four electrical motors. It can fly day or night. The European test flight is a warm-up for a planned 2014 world tour." The plane has a pilot and flew to 27,000 feet. Click on the plane icon to visit the Solar Impulse website.

NASHUA AIRPORT TO CLICK HERE TO READ AN ARTICLE FROM THE UNION LEADEROPEN FRIDAY AUGUST 31, 2012 08-30-12 Did you here about Nashua airport opening up with the new runway on Aug. 31? Here's a copy of an email from the airport managers office: "NASHUA AIRPORT TO OPEN FRIDAY AUGUST 31, 2012. Good news the airport will open around 12:00 PM on August 31st right after the ribbon cutting event.  There will still be construction for another two months with a lot of drainage work yet to be completed. Alpha Taxiway will be closed from Charlie (the new midfield taxiway) to the 32 end.  We will use the old inside taxilane that goes from the tower ramp to the old Hotel Taxiway to get to runway 32.  Use caution as this will be shared with vehicles.  Of course airplanes have the right of way!!! We are really excited about the ribbon cutting event happening this Friday, August 31st, that everyone is invited to.  It will start at 9:30 AM and will take place in the EastPoint Hangar located at 99 Pine Hill Road.  Hope to see you there!"

Rochester Aviation Private Pilot Graduates 08-29-12 Here's a pic sent in by Nohea for the private pilot graduates for Rochester Aviation in the month of August. Not counting the dog and Kelby I count seven pilots. Getting your private pilot license requires commitment of time for studying the required subjects and the hours of flying honing your skills for the big day with the FAA flight examiner. But after it's all done, you now have the opportunity to share your excitement of flying with your friends and family. You can also get a copy of the private pilot ground school schedule by clicking on the schedule icon.

Maine Air Show At Brunswick 08-25-12 Looks like the Maine Air Show at Brunswick had a nice weekend. For those able to make it on Sunday there was quite a performance list.

Autonomous Robotic Plane 08-23-12 According to AvWeb, MIT is doing some pretty amazing things CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATIONwith robotic model airplanes. One of the things that I find amazing is that the small onboard computer keeps track and calculates many times per second an array of data including the control of the airplanes flight attitude, speed, location and altitude. All the mechanical instruments like gyro's, diaphragms and gauges have all been replaced with solid state computer chips, sensors, and lasers. Watch this video and it doesn't take a lot of imagination to see this in automobiles. Maybe with your next car, you will drive up to a tollbooth and relinquish control to a computer until you reach the departing tollbooth where control is given back to you. (For some people, that's probably a good thing...)

Wings and Wheels at Skyhaven 08-19-12 Did you attend the Wings and Wheels event at Skyhaven on Saturday? Well the weather cooperated and the TFR was not scheduled to after the Wings and Wheels event. The biplane and Rochester Aviation aircraft were busy giving plane rides, the Young Eagles were also busy giving plane rides, and there was plenty of food and drink for everyone. If you didn't make it to the airport, no problem, here's a few pictures of the Wings and Wheels.

TFR is COMING 08-14-12: Here's some information about the presidential visit...

CTLS At Hampton AirportCLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION08-14-12: I read that Hampton Airport now has a CTLS at the airport and is for rent. Well the temptation was too great one day so I decided to go down and look for myself. Besides, it gave me an excuse to ask Pease (Portsmouth tower) for clearance to fly directly overhead at 2000 ft and check out what's going on over there. While I was on the radio I heard someone call Portsmouth Tower and report five miles north at 3500 ft. Portsmouth tower came back and said that he's out of the Portsmouth airspace and advised him to call Boston Center for traffic advisories. The pilot came back and said that he was just giving Portsmouth tower a heads up of his location. There was a pause, and the tower came back and said Roger... hmm.

THE TFR's ARE COMING 08-13-12: Did you see the TFR'ssss in Iowa? I'll have to give this one or these a big OMG! Check out the FAA map...

AOPA has a version on their website. I heard we are going to get on this weekend but I haven't seen anything official yet.

HOOD Blimp at Sanford CLICK HERE TO GET THE WHOLE STORY08-12-12: Every now and then the Hood blimp stops in at Sanford for a while. One day when I took their light sport for a ride the Hood blimp was coming in for a landing. That was a weird sight... the pilot seem to point the blimp towards the ground and kept going until he bounced off the landing gear. Then, a whole bunch of people started running around and grab the lines. When I finally got close enough to see what they were doing, they had already tide the nose of the blimp to a thoroughly anchored post with many tie down wires holding it in place. The blimp appeared to be tied at one anchor point on the nose which caused it to float and weave back and forth like a big wind sock. I saw a photographer at the FBO and he said they were going to do a test flight to set up the photography equipment. For more information, click on the Hood blimp.
