Rochester
Aviation at Airventure 2013 7-27-13
Here's a message from Rochester Aviation: "Rochester Aviation will be limiting
our schedule for the week of Airventure 2013. Due to limited office
personnel, we will be restricting plane rentals between Tuesday July 30th
and Sunday August 4th. All flights occurring between these dates must be
accompanied by a Rochester Aviation CFI, or approved by your instructor
directly(as they will have to get you the keys to the plane). We will not
be providing plane rentals between these dates to solo students and renters
without prior coordination. Feel free to email us to coordinate a rental,
we will do the best we can to get you in the air. Keep an eye on Facebook,
well be posting LOTS of pictures! Happy Flying, Kelby Ferwerda
Lam
Ailerons Boost Aircraft Performance 7-21-13:
For years, the operation
of the ailerons, elevator, rudder, and flaps have the same appearance,
shape and movement no matter what airplane you fly. At least when it comes
to Piper's and Cessna's, the biggest difference you might see would be
a stabilator in place of the stabilizer/elevator arrangement, or maybe
Fowler flaps versus a plain hinged flap. I flew a Light Sport a while ago
with "flaperons" and I thought that was strange. But the Lam aileron arrangement
is very different. In fact, to me, the ailerons seem to operate more like
a spoilers. It goes up but note down. Not only that, the flaps go all the
way out to the end of the wing, right underneath the aileron, and the ailerons
can operate together at the same time, or in the same direction? And, all
of this new design translates into higher performance figures without touching
the engine. They took a Columbia 300 and put a smaller wing on it with
the Lam aileron/flap arrangement and increased the top speed by 10% and
rate of climb by 50%. I wonder how close that brings you to the Vne speed?
Rochester

Sanderson's
Field Yankee Ultralight Flyers Fly-In 7-5-13:
This weekend is the ultralight fly-in at Sanderson's Field. Parking is
a voluntary donation. Parking is up on the hill of runway 25. It's actually
quite a view of the whole layout. The
temperature at 11am this morning (Friday 5th,) was around 93F. Is density
altitude an issue? Well when the airport elevation isn't far from sea level
it's not usually a major problem. Now if your elevation is 6000 ft, then
that's a different story. While I was there, a Skyhawk flew in and had
no problem coming in on 25. An ultralight took off on the hill and was
air born before he reached the bottom. No doubt the heat might scare some
people away but it's definitely worth a visit. I also talked to someone
with a paraglider motor and propeller arrangement in the back of his pickup
truck and he said he was thinking about going for a flight. He was carefully
analyzing the wind and pulling the parasail up by hand and letting it drop
back down several times and studying the canopy as it inflated and de-flated.

Interim
Aircraft Maintenance 6-28-13
The Fixed Base Operator (FBO), Aeroworks, LLC, will cease operations effective
September 1,2013. We will be issuing a Request for Proposals for FBO services
at Skyhaven with the realization that there is likely to be a period of
time without based aircraft maintenance services and/or a period of time
that Aeroworks is not able to accept additional business as they wind down.
With this in mind, we are taking interim measures to ensure that based
aircraft have options for aircraft maintenance. All interested mechanics
desiring to conduct commercial aircraft maintenance activities on Skyhaven
Airport are required to complete a form so that PDA Airport Management
can authorize it prior to work beginning on the aircraft. CLICK

In June
6-23-13
In between rain showers, taking a ride around the neighborhood can be a
learning experience as well as a sight seen experience when you're 2000
feet above the ground. An instructor once told me that every flight he
took was a learning experience. You might see an unusual airplane you've
never seen before or some landscape scenes that just can't be seen from
the road right in our own backyards. How about the progress being made
at the Granite State Business Park. In just one year, the southeast section
was transformed from an undeveloped area to a state of the art factory
including a brand new bridge with green grass crossing over the railroad
tracks. Next time you're in the pilot lounge be sure to checkout the art
work on the solo shirt tails on display around the walls.
Wings
& Wheels 6-18-13
Here's some pictures from Peter Bruckner. The day started out wet but some
blue sky came along to make the event a success and some lucky kids got
a chance to take a free plane ride with the Young Eagles event sponsored
by the EAA Chapter 225. CLICK on the icon to enlarge.

big fire engine. CLICK

EAA 225
Young Eagle Flight Rally & Annual Wings & Wheels 6-7-13:
News of the Day is that everything planned for Saturday, June 8th will
go on as planned. The weather guru's said that the rainy weather would
break up mid morning on Saturday. For all Pilots and for Ground Volunteers,
remember, that EAA 225 will be serving a Pancake Breakfast from 8 am
until 10 or 11 am and will start serving BBQ'd Sausage starting
around 11:30 for lunch. Come down and spend some time to help out,
there should be plenty to see and do at Skyhaven Airport tomorrow.
GE
Grows
Jet
Engine Parts 6-7-13:
Aircraft engine manufacturers are always coming out with new designs incorporating
new ideas for improved operation and efficiency.
Continental recently came out with the O-200-D for light sport aircraft
and Rotax now offers a fuel injected version called the 912iS. Those engines
are all basically made with the conventional manufacturing process of machining
raw materials like steel and aluminum into precision metal components.
However, GE has been experimenting with a new process called "Additive
Manufacturing with Direct Metal Laser Melting." Instead of machining the
parts, a special laser machine melts a cross section of the part, one layer
at a time, until the whole part is built. I would compare it similar to
making a brick house. They are currently growing and testing jet engine
parts for the new LEAP engine. Industry has been growing parts out of plastic
for a number of years, but now they are doing it with exotic engine parts
with materials like niobium-titanium.
FUEL
FARM MAINTENANCE 6-5-13:
Starting at approximately 0730 local time on Monday, June 10, 2013 until
Wednesday, June 12, 2013 the Skyhaven Airport Fuel Farm will be out
of service for fuel farm maintenance and pipe replacement. Aviation Fuel
(100LL) will not be available during this time. Personnel and Equipment
will be working in the area of the fuel farm and that area of the apron
should be avoided. Times are subject to weather and equipment delays, so
please check your NOTAMs frequently.
